Don’t ever say that Podcasting 2.0 features are too complicated for “normies”. As part of their new video publishing feature announcement Apple is walking people through how to generate API keys and copy and paste them into their hosting platform dashboard.

I’m actually excited that Apple is supporting this.

@samsethi@podcastindex.social I can’t see Apple ever supporting micropayments even though they’re such a good idea.

@phillycodehound never say never. If Apple see money in them hills they might bend. Imagine using Apple Pay for subscriptions and streaming payments. Apple
Taking a cut would be their incentive. It might not be Bitcoin but it could be StableCoins

@samsethi@podcastindex.social That’s probably what it is. BTC vs StableCoin. If SC works, Apple might jump on, but BTC has too much negative going against it. IMO

@dave the more I read about Apples support for HLS the more I think it will be a cautious and limited. I suspect Live using HLS will be equally limited in scope.

TrueFans currently steams MP3 files in 6 sec packets like HLS but only in one bitrate 128k stereo. We have already tested streaming MP4 and will launch that next week but again only 720k. We will add 1080p/4K next but will make them a premium charge for users.

We already support HLS playback in our app and HLS in the Alt Enclosure.

@dave I can't get this out of my head. An indictment of OAuth, really. They can't trust all of the hosting companies to get it right - and frankly, I don't blame them

@dave Would you consider the hosted API itself to be a critical element of what the index is doing for the community? One could make the case that the open-source code for anyone to run it themselves is the better use of your time than maintaining a free service for people who’re never going to appreciate the v4v model.

Imagine if the API had trial-sized rate limits, then flipped into a pay-what-you-want model powered by L402/x402
