University of California campuses saw computer science enrollment drop -6% this year. With tech companies fully embracing senior engineers using AI over college hires, this is the logical result.

We’re going to be starved of a pipeline of software engineers in the future. Unless you believe AI has fully commodified software development.

@carnage4life Is this the logical result? What happens when we have no more senior engineers?

Though, honestly, companies weren't hiring college grads before AI. They only wanted rockstar unicorn ninjas.

@carnage4life except for #UCSD where new data science/AI majors were initiated. The range of skills, particularly data literacy and wrangling, as well as parallel compute, are not always parts of typical CS majors. I have taught data vis and parallelism in the ICAM (Department of Visual Arts) for over 15 years, and my colleagues in computing in the arts have been vanguards understanding AI in art for a long time. (No, you all just thought #genai... It is complicated...)
