Now, so, here's a thing. I cover five "new podcasts in video" today in Podnews. Only one of those has actually launched video on Spotify, however - the rest haven't bothered. That doesn't tell a great story, does it, about Spotify's video.
Spotify's video is free. And anyone can do it - you just upload a video file to it. But these big companies haven't.
Apple Podcasts will cost podcasters money to support (through their podcast hosts) and it will be considerably more complicated. It's only available through four hosting companies. So... um.

@james from a user (specifically, a parent's) perspective, Spotify Video is the reason I am shifting everything away from Spotify and getting ready to cancel it. You can't disable video podcasts in Spotify, therefore I can't trust it as something my kids can use to listen to podcasts.
A bunch of inane, offensive Youtubers have started dumping all their content there to get around parents controlling YouTube time.

@james are we losing the traditional definition of podcasting in that it's an audio file? I'm also curious about the demographics of video versus audio and what the percentages are out there. I'm not at all keen on doing any videos myself - I have a face for audio only! - and as for when and where I listen, it's either in the car or in bad at night. It's interesting to see where the definition is now.

@jimbob I was personally happier with my daughter using YouTube Music (and YouTube Main) as a child Premium subscriber. That allowed adult video to be hidden from her in both services. But the Australian government decided that she should be banned from having a YouTube account, and so here we are with the Wild West of Spotify.

@TheComfortableSpotPodcast Lots of data here - https://podnews.net/update/video-first-no
But I think podcasting is an audio-first file. I think itβs fine to have video. But if you have to watch the video to work out whatβs going on, or you have to watch it so as to not miss anything, THAT is the line when it stops being a podcast.
βSomething for your ears when your eyes are busyβ.
