    @AvonVilla

    Sydney is one few major cities that just jettisons it’s basically untreated sewerage out to sea. Building proper treatment plants in sea/harbourside locations, mostly expensive suburbs, is a huge NIMBY issue.

    Melbourne puts its waste through a much more thorough treatment process. Doesn’t mean we couldn’t improve, but…

    @Susan60 @AvonVilla I remember when Sydney built the “deep oceans outfalls” in the 90s, and I presumed we were upgrading treatment at the time, but no, we still send primary-treated sewage out to sea, in 2026. It’s extraordinary.

      Yeah, just spent money sending it further out, & still it washes up on Bondi beach.

        @Susan60 @AvonVilla it’s extraordinary that this is (a) how it works and (b) not high on the priority list to fix, is wild.

          @corduroy @AvonVilla

          I think it really is a problem of where to locate proper sewerage treatment plants. They need to be close enough to the sea, but not too close, & that is prime real estate in Sydney. Melbournes Werribee & Carrum Downs plants were built years ago when the space was available.

            @Susan60 @AvonVilla Canberra treats it then pumps it into the Murrumbidgee, just before it crosses the border back into NSW

            @luciedigitalni @Susan60 I've walked past the treatment plant many times on the Shepherd's Loop/Uruiarra track. Some great walks around there, absolutely beautiful country. One hopes the treatment is much better than what happens in Sydney!

                        The failure to recognise a serious infection or to take the parents concerns seriously…

                        I had an excellent GP years ago who said he always took a parents concerns seriously because they know their child better than anyone else. If a parent has history as a helicopter parent it might be different, but when the doctor has only just met the parent, they should err on the side of caution.

                        And the poo situation? Horrendous. Effin privatisation…

                          I deleted those viral BlueSky posts because while I don’t agree with how it was started, the community it’s become is pretty amazing, with projects like BlackSky proving how extensible it is.
