@dave Ehh, it's the kind of tag that only works with universal adoption, but the climb from 0% has so many incentives working against it. Any developer who wants a UX like the screenshots below will build a fallback for shows without the tag. Just vibe-code a dominant color extraction and derive your theme from that. At that point, a `<podcast:themeColor hex="#FFA32A"/>` tag would actually be a less trustworthy source of data than the fallback code. (Updated artwork, forgot the tag.)

@dave My recommendation is that app developers who want to support more theming in their app should document some new purpose tokens for the `podcast:image` tag, and encourage podcasters to provide the assets that would enable that richer experience in their app. That's basically how Apple does it. Just not in the feed.

@dave I have a half-finished blog post trying to explain that it's not enough to propose a hypothetical end state with universal adoption. New tags have to convince developers that it'll be worthwhile to be one of the first to adopt it, long before a tag reaches that point.

@dave I think that still begs the same question: "If a given tag is missing, who's to blame for a poor listener experience? The podcaster or the developer?"

We already have those expectations for things like a default image and title, but I don't know that developers implementing publisher feeds will feel comfortable putting that burden on the hosts for any new tag.

@dave When I was launching Steno, I got a lot of people expecting transcripts on every single show, and I was comfortable laying the blame at the feet of the podcaster cause I had nothing to lose. But you can see that Apple and Overcast felt they had to put in a lot more work to release a satisfactory product.
