Imagine sharing a link to your fediverse account to someone not on the fediverse, hoping they follow you.
Now imagine instead that the link you share takes them to a beautiful yet simple landing page that carefully guides them to the ideal platform, geographically closest, and helps them through the onboarding process, recommends the best desktop/mobile client and then follows you from their new account.
Stop dreaming. I'm building this. Wanna help?

@rolle @dansup Frankly, I have no issue with Dansup starting a lot of projects, especially when theyβre thematically interrelated. I have an issue with him starting them alone. Thereβs been no word about organized teams and collective maintainers being deployed to any of his numerous projects, such that he could take on the role of βvision leadβ while well-capable programmers support the groundwork heβs laid. Delegation needs to happen when you scale this fast.
@moshimotsu Well, he is literally asking "Wanna help?"... @dansup
-
@rolle @dansup While true, allowing yourself to neglect projects that youβve built in the past and are still not complete (because FOSS projects never areβ¦) AFTER theyβve had time to become a part of usersβ social infrastructure is a massive exercise in shirked responsibility. And lending a hand becomes less tenable when the maintainer who will ACCEPT those lended hands is spreading himself thin across multiple projects; one man can only approve so many PRs.
it seems rather rude to me to decide to tell someone what their priorities should be. it is true he's one person and there's a lot to do. so he needs help, he doesn't need a self-appointed boss. do you pay him? no. so he does whatever he wants. that's the way it should be

@dansup I recall seeing similar projects to this in the past. I wonder if that's a case of those old projects not getting well known.

Let me know what kind of help you need and when you need it - I design and implement APIs often, and am decent with TypeScript - this seems like a good opportunity to get on-hand experience with FediDB's APIs

@dansup sounds like something the fediverse would really benefit from!
I hope you can build up a team of folks working on this together
you stay really busy, and it takes working together to build something with a big impact, especially when you're juggling lots of projectsI'm rooting for you!

@dansup I knew you could fix this Fediverse issue!
Do you remember this?
Rodrigo Silva (@rodsilva@mastodon.com.br)
@dansup@mastodon.social you're a beast! It's incredible what you've been doing for the fediverse! Thank you! I love the fediverse but it still isn't very user friendly when you need to interact with other instances. For example, if I click on a link to your Mastodon profile and it is on a different instance than mine, the flow to follow you or favorite or retoot one of your posts isn't very intuitive. There is a lot of people asking for the creation of some web-based protocol handlers for ActivityPub but this proposal never gets attention... Maybe you're the man to make it real! I'll let a link with some links to this proposal on various places so you can have a better idea of what I'm talking about. https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/web-based-protocol-handlers-for-activitypub-resources/3563/3 Thanks again and sorry for the long text.

@benroyce @rolle @dansup Oh, I donβt mean to dictate what someoneβs priorities ought or ought not to be; youβre right, thatβs their prerogative. But Danielβs established that his priority is to support the Fediverse by building strong platforms for it; vision dissonance takes time away from working on the software that thousands of Fedizens now depend on, which runs in contradiction to his OWN priorities. You canβt have your cake and eat it too.

@moshimotsu Anyone can start a thousand open source projects if they want, even just as experiments. That's how open source grows - by letting people try new things without judgment. You still sound too judgmental and nitpicky. My point stands. @benroyce @dansup

so you were called out for being bossy
and you reply to that call out with...
patronizing dan and continuing to act bossy

marcial,
you're the problem with the fediverse:
these fucking entitled, controlling busybodies
you think you can concern troll and demand of other people's attention and time on the premise that you, who don't do shit, somehow are the boss
no marcial, you aren't
what you do is:
you help dan
or you shut the fuck up
understand, asswipe?
-
@alemarcati @moshimotsu @rolle @dansup
ah. ok
the "polite society" song and dance routine that coddles concern trolls
marcial is not contributing shit, alexandre
marcial is patronizing and condescending and micromanaging someone else's concerns and priorities
that is a troll angle Alexandre, nothing more
why do you defend that?
*that* is what is uncalled for
-
@alemarcati @moshimotsu @rolle @dansup
alexandre, you don't have to like my language. i admit to being a loudmouth and a hothead. and perhaps i've been hanging on mastodon for too long, so a certain side of the problem here rings louder for me than it does for you
but what is absolutely true is that there are people who feel entitled to busybody and control others, rather than contribute
and this behavior, at the least, is a negative drain. at the worse, a troll angle you should be aware of
-

@benroyce There's been a miscommunication!
I didn't intend to be patronizing or "bossy," my intent was only to point out what I feel might be overdiversification before setting up a strong team of buildersβwhich is a goal that Daniel himself has actually expressed in the past! Just a, "hey, this is cool, but please make sure you're still working on the base you've established for yourself."
Whether Daniel agrees or not, up to him! As a proponent of Fedi, I simply wanted to voice one opinion.

@benroyce And while I'll certainly take your advice on trying to come off as less entitled to heart, I can't say that being called an "asswipe" inspires confidence in self-reflection. Nonetheless, the internet is great at making it super difficult to glean character from <400 character posts, and already provides too small a window frame to understanding one another at all. So, I'll be muting this thread, but if we interact further elsewhere, I'd take to more constructive criticism a bit better!

Fair
But please: let Dan be Dan. He knows all of this already
If anything this is merely a problem with open source: we do whatever the fuck we want. This is very freeing, and very attractive
But it doesn't mean it has any focus
But that's ok. The path forward isn't a straight line
And what gives me fear is negative feedback because that kills motivation
Dan's done so much already, just praise his good efforts
And let him do whatever the fuck he wants
-

I am a hothead and a loudmouth. If it means anything you see me calling people asswipes, fuckwits, douchebags, etc, 2-3 times a day. Search my post history
Doesn't mean you have to like it or accept it. Just process it as a personality style about how I communicate, not about what you deserve or not
-

@rolle In fairness, having <500 characters to express an opinion makes it easy for me to express the wrong voice
And you're right, open source is absolutely about experimentation! What I was hoping to point out was that the goals he's setting out for himself usually involve huge teams of people (Mastodon alone is an entire non-profit), and are altruistic in nature; FOSS can already lead to burnout on its own, and I wary of burnout when you run two entire social platforms, and then add more.
