Okay Aussie peeps, my stupid (swear swear swear) phone is about to kick the bucket, less than 3 years old, most inconvenient. Right before my holiday. Sigh.
Recommendations please for: not too expensive outright purchase phone, doesn't need to be flash.
My main jobs for it are using it as a phone (how quaint): text; podcasts, audiobooks, and my social media stuff. Photos are less important, I"m assuming pretty much anything is going to have a fairly decent
camera? And are all brands are equally evil?
Thanks.@caity although the camera is decent but not amazing, I really like my iPhone SE. Itβs a nice compact size. Sometimes they come up at decent prices

@joannaholman Thank you! Second vote for this, and it would integrate with my ipad (although thatβs not a huge consideration.) Photos arenβt a huge priority.

Thanks.@caity I fear this will be no help, but I can't help myself. When my previous phone failed, one of my options was a used Pixel from cex, modified by me to run either CalyxOS or grapheneOS. These are non-evil operating systems allowing you to detach from google, but they require a bit of tech-fu to get set up. I love that stuff, but it's not for everyone.
In the end I opted for a dumb phone. It was cheaper and better for my technology addiction.
Since then, this intriguing device (Mudita Kompakt) has also emerged, somewhere halfway between a dumbphone and a degoogled custom OS, but with an e-ink screen. I think it counts as "flash". It looks great though. https://mudita.com/products/phones/mudita-kompakt/

@joannaholman @caity I'm an iPhone fan too, my iPhone 15 does everything needed and the camera is great.

Thanks.@caity I love my cheap Motorola phones. Batteries last days, camera is crap, but who cares, does what you need

@AvonVilla If I had the time, Iβd be playing with a used Pixel and doing the same. Arrgh!
Sadly, one of use in this house needs to have a smart phone. I limit how much time I spend on mine, and what I use it for, but there are Things (grrrrrr) such as travel, which force me to have one.
Thanks, though, the middle way looks intriguing indeed!

@sortius Well, Iβm a very basic kinda personβ¦.

@caity when it comes to my phone, all I need is 5G, NFC for my wallet, and be fast enough for web, music, video, social media. My Moto g54 5G does that, I'm sure there's an updated model that's almost identical

@caity @timrichards @joannaholman also the Apple Store offers older phones not just the latest models for sale new

@caity the iPhone SE was discontinued last year when it was replaced with the 16e. There is a 17e update coming imminently. If you can hold off a bit longer you will either snag a newer device, or get the 16e at an even lower cost as retailers cut the price to get rid of leftover inventory.
I agree with @joannaholman that it is a great device for the price, and you would enjoy how it integrates with your iPad.

Thanks.@caity I have the Samsung S25+ probably bit more than what you're after.

@caity @timrichards @joannaholman though I checked online and none seem very cheap at present

@dwillanski Great idea, thank you!
@caity @dwillanski I got a refurbished one 12 years ago and only now need to replace it. Will definitely go for Green Gadgets.

Thanks.@caity Check out JB HiFi online. I got a superseded Samsung model that was listed as "used" for a considerable discount. When it arrived, it had clearly never been used at all - probably just surplus stock.
The Samsung "A" series have lesser camera quality but all the functions you're looking for. I've found Samsung perfectly good and better value than apple. -

Thanks.@caity it may still be covered by Australian Consumer Guarantee ... 3 years is well under the expected life of a new phone!
Check with Samsung, they fixed my old one no questions asked

@AnnonBudgie Unfortunately Iβm between a rock and a hard place - I canβt afford to be without a phone at all (family and medical reasons) so even if they offered to fix it, Iβd still have to shell out for a new one. I donβt think Iβm getting this brand again.

I now keep the old one as a spare -
