I have been involved in #podcasting from very very early on. I can tell you it has always been rife with this needy, thirsty quest for validation. "Oh goodie, iTunes supports podcasting!" "Oh look, this giant media company noticed us!" "Maybe I can make it on some list!"
My goal now is as it was then - produce a show that is what I want to publish at that time. I have never once asked listeners to rate me so that my listenership will increase. I'm not opposed to increase but I'm not begging for it nor even thinking hard about it. I avoid most of the best practices du jour, a maddening set of goal posts that have been moving for 21 years and counting.
Long ago I suggested podcasters think about this question: "If your listenership drops, what is the minimum number that you consider viable for continuing?" Then as now my answer remains 0. I like doing it, it helps me crystallize my thoughts. Any outcome is the tail but it does not wag this dog.
Listen if you like. You can join the vast majority of the planet in indifference if you prefer. I'll keep doing it either way.

I fully agree. I enjoy the act of podcasting and meeting new people through it. If my listener numbers drop some… I don’t sweat it. I look at where they’re dropping off from and make adjustments, but I don’t quit.

An addendum: When I went to #PodcastMovement one of the first bits of small talk from **literally** anybody was "What are your stats?" I answered honestly "I haven't known for 20 years."
When I signed on with Backbeat Media one of the perqs was getting hosting through their Cachefly account. Just between you me and the lamppost - although I get sponsorships now and then (at a rate low enough that surely I am losing them money) the value of that free hosting exceeds the value in cash money I have brought in.
Dave Hamilton knows my stats. I do not and have never asked because I don't want to know.
In my head I might have a number. Let's say the data is above that number. I'll feel good for what, 20 minutes? Let's say the number is below that. I'll feel bad for what, weeks? Months? Let's say it is **way** under that. I'll feel bad for what, forever?
I don't need to know. I don't want to know. I have enough people interacting with me to make me feel good. I have 37 patrons so if my listenership is 38 per episode I'm on the good side of the ledger.
For someone doing a decidedly anti-commercial podcast with no unifying theme, no set release schedule, no elevator pitch I have succeeded wildly above expectations. I feel good about that. So don't tell me a number I don't want to know.
